Those relatively new 100-calorie packs are everywhere these days. Kraft started the trend and it has exploded. In the last year and half, 258 different 100-calorie packs have been introduced (together, they make one hell of a 25,800 calorie meal).
But here’s the rub. People who eat the 100-calorie packs might actually be eating more.
A study reported in the Journal of Consumer Research found that participants given 100-calorie snack packs while watching television ate significantly more than those who were given regular-sized bags of potato chips to snack from. Food analyst Marcia Mogelonsky, Ph.D., tells Brand Week that the 100-calorie packs were “a license to overeat.”
I don’t really get the attraction to these tiny portions anyway. What’s next, inhaling particles of Oreos?
Update: Worse than particles. The Chocolate Inhaler. (thanks to reader Sara for the link)
