A lot of so-called healthy or natural foods contain ingredients you might not be expecting (or noticing).
For example, did you know a large percentage of “all-natural’ chickens are pumped full of salt water? Or that many salt substitutes can be bad for you? Or that manufacturers can round down numbers when it comes to the amount of trans-fats in a product? And what about “wheat” bread?
This is a meaningless term, since almost all bread is made with wheat. Some manufacturers add to the illusion by using a brown wrapper or darkening bread with brown sugar or molasses. The more healthful stuff is whole wheat, which includes the outer bran and the wheat germ inside, good sources of nutrients and fiber. Check the ingredients. If the first one listed is “enriched wheat flour,” you aren’t getting much whole grain.
That’s just one more reason to stick with bagels, the last honest bread.
