Your Calorie Intake: The Patch Knows

You may soon be able to pick up a calorie monitor that can be attached to your person as simply as putting on a band-aid. There are several options when you are trying to get a rough estimate of calories being burned. But this new device also measures calorie intake and can let you know how you’re doing each aay:

The calorie monitor, which is being developed by biotech incubator PhiloMetron, uses a combination of sensors, electrodes, and accelerometers that—together with a unique algorithm—measure the number of calories eaten, the number of calories burned, and the net gain or loss over a 24-hour period. The patch sends this data via a Bluetooth wireless connection to a dieter’s cell phone, where an application tracks the totals and provides support. “You missed your goal for today, but you can make it up tomorrow by taking a 15-minute walk or having a salad for dinner,” it might suggest.

Sounds like a decent way to get out of undesireable dinner engagements. Sorry, my band-aid said no. But does the technology stop at calorie measurement? I keep wondering if I’ll someday be interrupted by the band-aid and told I’m sort of being a jackass.

FWIW, I feel like PhiloMetron needs a website upgrade before product launch.
