Why is my mom cleaning my gutters? Why am I open to the idea of letting some of the folks from the assisted living center down the street re-shingle my roof? Why do I recruit for manual laborers in the steam room of my local Jewish men’s club?

The answer is simple. Because I care.

A new study indicates that volunteering among retirees can extend one’s lifespan.

In a study of U.S. retirees, researchers found that volunteering significantly reduced the chances of dying over a four-year period.

Volunteering, the investigators say, may improve health outcomes by expanding retirees’ social networks, increasing their access to resources and improving their sense of self-worth

So if any retirees are reading this and need a little self-esteem boost, my yard is a friggin mess and it’s just waiting for you.
