Mia Washington had twins about a year ago. Her partner James Harrison was a little surprised that the two babies looked so different. So they did a paternity test. And sure enough, each twin had a different father.
Every month a woman’s ovary releases one egg that can be fertilized by one sperm. But in this case, a pair of eggs emerged.
Sperm, meanwhile, can remain alive and well and viable for up to five days in the reproductive tract. Thus a woman can have sex with different men within those five days and the sperm “just kind of hang out there waiting for the egg to be released.”
There are some studies that suggest this occurance isn’t even that rare (up to 2% of all fraternal twins). But there are some studies that say pretty much anything.
