Is the porn industry turning into a reality show that focuses on health care in the San Fernando Valley? While the grunts and groans may be fake, the transmission of STDs is anything but.
Since 2004, 22 performers have tested HIV positive, 2378 tested positive for chlamydia, 1357 for gonorrhoea and 15 for syphilis. And these numbers are likely low as a person has to describe themselves as an adult film performer at the time of testing.
Still, the likelihood of a big political move to clean up the industry and create mandatory restrictions (such as condom use and fake body fluids) is highly unlikely. Politicians don’t want to get involved and the porn industry is almost uniformly against more regulation.
Update: LA County is backtracking on these HIV numbers. Potentially not as bad as first reported.
