BMI: 200 Year Old Hack

Many rely on the BMI (body mass index) to determine whether a person is obese. But even the guy who came up with the formula never suggested that it be used to determine the fatness of an individual.

The BMI is determined by dividing your weight by your height in inches squared and then multiplying the result by 703. One of NPR’s math guys (who calls the BMI a two hundred year-old hack) says the number should not be taken seriously for at least ten different reasons.
