Internet for Breakfast: What For?

The numbers are in. Many people hit the internet first thing in the morning (unless we’re all suddenly getting up earlier).

This is morning in America in the Internet age. After six to eight hours of network deprivation — also known as sleep — people are increasingly waking up and lunging for cellphones and laptops, sometimes even before swinging their legs to the floor and tending to more biologically urgent activities.

Why are we doing this? Why are we allowing ourselves to be distracted from our few moments of quality family time? To see if someone retweeted us or friended us on Facebook? We’re losing our minds, myself included. There are a lot of tremendous things about technology and the connections and communications it enables. But this is a horrible trend, period.
