An Australian researcher believes he’s unearthed evidence that being in a bad mood can actually make you think more clearly:

Whereas a positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, co-operation and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking, paying greater attention to the external world.

So being in a bad mood makes it more likely you’d focus on the external world. And we all know the external world (jerk that it is) puts you in a worse mood. Nice little cycle there.
